SkinCeuticals: The Antioxidant Standard

Why SkinCeuticals' C E Ferulic set the benchmark for morning antioxidant defence, and what the formulation science tells us about why it still has not been bettered.

SkinCeuticals: The Antioxidant Standard

The antioxidant benchmark

SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic remains the most-studied vitamin C serum in clinical skincare. Its formula, 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), and 0.5% ferulic acid, formulated below pH 3.5, established the standard for morning antioxidant defence and has rarely been bettered in twenty years.

Why the combination matters

The three actives work synergistically in a way no single ingredient can:

  • L-ascorbic acid (15%) neutralises free radicals in the water phase of the cell and supports collagen synthesis.
  • Alpha-tocopherol (1%) is the skin's primary lipid-phase antioxidant. Vitamin C regenerates depleted vitamin E, doubling its antioxidant capacity.
  • Ferulic acid (0.5%) stabilises both vitamins, extends photoprotection, and neutralises free radicals generated by UV, pollution and visible light.

The clinical evidence

Peer-reviewed studies show the combination provides up to eight-fold photoprotection against UV-induced erythema and oxidative stress, a meaningful benefit layered on top of SPF. It also reduces oxidative damage from ozone and visible light, both implicated in pigmentation and ageing.

The formulation detail

15% L-ascorbic acid is the evidence-led concentration, high enough for efficacy, low enough for tolerability. Formulated below pH 3.5, it remains stable and bioavailable. This is not accidental; the patent and the science are the same.

How to use it

Apply 4–5 drops to dry skin every morning, before moisturiser and SPF. Wait approximately 60 seconds for absorption. It is the single most evidence-backed step in an AM routine, and the reason SK1N stocks the SkinCeuticals antioxidant range.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is C E Ferulic so well regarded?+

It is the most clinically studied vitamin C combination in dermatology. The 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid formula, at pH below 3.5, is the evidence-led benchmark — peer-reviewed studies show up to eight-fold photoprotection against UV-induced oxidative stress on top of SPF.

Can I use it with retinol?+

Yes, but at different times of day. C E Ferulic belongs in the morning, layered under moisturiser and SPF for antioxidant defence. Retinol belongs in the evening. They are complementary, not conflicting, when used at opposite ends of the day.

How long does a bottle last before it oxidises?+

Once opened, use within 3–6 months. L-ascorbic acid oxidises on air and light exposure, turning amber then brown. Store in a cool, dark place. An oxidised serum has lost efficacy — if it darkens significantly, replace it.

Is 15% vitamin C too strong for sensitive skin?+

It can sting on reactive skin. Apply to dry skin, wait for it to absorb, then layer moisturiser over it. If irritation persists, consider a gentler vitamin C derivative (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate or sodium ascorbyl phosphate) and reintroduce L-ascorbic acid once your barrier is robust.

Do I still need SPF if I use an antioxidant?+

Absolutely. Antioxidants add free-radical defence on top of SPF but do not replace UV filtration. They are complementary: antioxidant under SPF, daily, broad-spectrum, reapplied through exposure. Together they are far more effective than either alone.
